Two takes on the recently concluded legislative session
SANTA FE, N.M. — Earlier I made a pledge that the state legislature would not turn into Washington D.C., where bickering takes precedence over action on policy-making. Unfortunately, Gov. Susana Martinez and her allies in the House of Representatives elected not to work on a bipartisan basis, but instead used bullying tactics to push her agenda. It was an agenda with which a majority of the Senate honestly and honorably disagreed.
On nearly every issue before the Legislature, the House majority chose to serve the administration instead of the people of this state. Threats frequently were made to the Senate to endorse policies that were unsound and harmful to New Mexicans. The Senate is not a body prone to be intimidated, and wisely it did not go along.
