Tax-break package pushed for special session
SANTA FE – The question of whether to add a bundle of proposed tax breaks to the agenda of a potential New Mexico special legislative session has emerged as a thorny point in talks between House and Senate leaders, a top-ranking Senate Democrat says.
Sen. John Arthur Smith, D-Deming, said this week that he would prefer that a special session focus solely on passing a capital works package, after a previous bill that included $264 million in projects died on the final day of this year’s 60-day session.
“If you want to keep adding stuff, I can add stuff – but I hate to go there,” said Smith, the Senate’s lead negotiator in the ongoing special session talks. “We want to make this session just as short as possible.”
