Silver City student delivers Gila River petition to NM Gov. Susana Martinez’s office

Six additional teens from Las Cruces also spoke to the governor’s staff

Courtesy photo  Vianca Fernandez and Jose Villegas, two of the six Las Cruces Latino youth who traveled to Sante Fe Monday to speak out about preserving the Gila River met with State Senator William Soules on the floor of NM State Senate.

SILVER CITY >> Aldo Leopold Charter School student Ella Kirk, 14, delivered her petition Monday at Gov. Susana Martinez’s office in Santa Fe. She also appeared in the state Senate and was introduced to the Legislature by Sen. Howie Morales, D-Silver City. Kirk has become a vocal participant in the fight to save the Gila River.

“It was really rewarding to be able to go to the state capitol and meet on an issue I care so much about, even though I was disappointed that I didn’t get to meet with the governor,” Kirk said through email.
