Santa Fe—New Mexico State Senate leaders expressed their condolences to the family of Rabbi Leonard Helman of Santa Fe who passed away this morning at the age of 86. The Rabbi was the Chaplain Emeritus of the New Mexico State Senate and was held in high regard by the members of the body. “He was an institution in the Senate and will be deeply missed by senators from both sides of the aisle,” said Sen. Michael S. Sanchez, Senate Majority Leader.
Rabbi Helman was named Chaplain Emeritus for Life in 2008. He was known for giving memorable morning invocations that began countless Senate floor sessions. He also coordinated the scheduling of other speakers to provide the daily invocations.
In addition to his duties with the Senate, he was a dedicated rabbi, as well as a community leader who officiated numerous events in Santa Fe and consistently gave back to his community and to charitable causes around the world. He was deemed a living treasure by the City of Santa Fe in 2004.
