The Senate Majority Caucus wishes to convey our most sincere condolences to the family of Fabian Chavez Jr., who died Sunday at the age of 88 in Santa Fe.
“The dedication of Senator Chavez, as well as his diverse and illustrious career, serves as an inspiration to all of us who continue in his footsteps here at the Senate,” said Majority Floor Leader Michael S. Sanchez, (D) Bernalillo, Valencia, District 29. “The absence of the well-respected Senator Chavez in the halls and Chambers at the Roundhouse will certainly be noticed by many for years to come. I never knew a man who loved New Mexico as much as he did.
“People should always remember him as a champion of civil rights, especially here in New Mexico where our citizens are as diverse as the magnificent landscape.”
Chavez, who once served as Senate Majority Floor Leader, also lost a close race for governor against David Cargo in 1968. His state lawmaking career began in 1950 when he was elected to the House of Representatives, and later to the state Senate in 1956, rising to Majority Floor Leader five years later.
The dedicated public servant was preceded in death by his wife, Coral Jeanne, in 2006. He was one of 10 children born in Wagon Mound, New Mexico, which also included Fray Angelico Chavez, a Franciscan priest and literary giant who died in 1986.
