Senate kills bill to let private school kids play on public school teams

    Students who attend small private schools without sports programs won’t be allowed to play on athletic teams at public schools, state senators decided Monday.

    They voted 23-18 to defeat a bill sponsored by Republican Sen. Bill Sharer of Farmington. He wanted to open extracurricular activities at public schools to students who attend private schools with an enrollment of 350 or less.

    Senators debated the bill for more than two hours in two separate, emotionally charged floor sessions. Sharer said he was surprised that his bill generated such strong emotions and heavy opposition.
