Senate Democratic Caucus Selects Leaders for the 57th Legislature
Santa Fe – Members of the New Mexico Senate Democratic Caucus met today to nominate their choice for Senate President Pro Tempore and to select the Senate Majority Leader, Senate Majority Whip and the Senate Majority Caucus Chair.
Senate Democrats chose Senator Mimi Stewart (D-Albuquerque) as their nominee for Senate President Pro Tempore. The election for Pro Tem will take place in January when the full senate convenes.
“I am honored to have the support of our diverse new Democratic Caucus for President Pro Tempore as we enter what will undoubtedly be a tough but productive session,” said Senator Stewart. “I have confidence that Democrats and Republicans will work across the aisle to best serve the people of New Mexico.”
The Democratic Caucus elected Senator Peter Wirth (D-Santa Fe), by acclamation, to continue to serve as the Democratic Majority leader for the 57th Legislature. Senator Wirth was first elected to the New Mexico Senate in 2008 and has served as Majority Leader since 2017.
“It is humbling to be re-elected Majority Leader once again by my colleagues, and it is a real honor to have the Caucus choose me by acclamation. Democrats in the Senate are united,” said Senator Wirth. “I’m very excited about the talent and perspectives our new members bring to the table. We are ready to work with the House and Governor to deliver solutions to the many challenges facing the state.”
New Mexico Senate Democrats re-elected Senator Michael Padilla (D-Albuquerque) as the Senate Majority Whip. “I would like to thank the Senate Democratic Caucus for having the continued confidence in me to do this job,” said Senator Padilla. “It is an honor to serve in this capacity and I pledge to work with every member of our caucus 24/7 as we continue our commitment to uplifting the lives of every New Mexican.”
Democrats in the Senate elected Senator Leo Jaramillo (D-Española) to be the Majority Caucus Chair. “It is an honor to have been elected by my colleagues to serve as Caucus Chair,” said Senator Jaramillo. “I am excited to join the leadership team and build on the changes we are making to positively impact every community across this state.”
The opening day of the 57th Legislative Session will be January 21, 2025. During a 60 day session, there are no restrictions on the subjects of bills that can be introduced.
