Senate committee deals blow on legislation to allow adjunct teachers

    Democratic state senators stopped a bill Monday night that would have allowed public schools to hire part-time adjunct teachers.

    This means another initiative on public education by Republicans is probably dead. The Republican-controlled House of Representatives last week had approved a bill for adjunct teachers on a 31-21, party-line vote.

    That bill, similar to the one blocked in the Senate, probably is doomed now.

    Members of the Senate Judiciary Committee tabled the bill for adjunct teachers on a 5-5 vote. A bill cannot advance on a tie.
