Senate backs bill to allow hemp research in New Mexico

America’s long war on hemp as an illegal drug is softening, and so is New Mexico’s.
State senators voted 33-8 Monday for a bill to permit research of hemp as a commercial agricultural product. The sponsor, Sen. Cisco McSorley, D-Albuquerque, next will pitch his bill in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives.
A companion bill in the House has been held up intentionally by Democrats so that McSorley could have a final version of his proposal in place.
