Senator of 26 years has issues with Deming streets; wants more funding for nursing program
DEMING >> On the opening day of the 2015 Legislative Session in Santa Fe, New Mexico Sen. John Arthur Smith (D-Deming) has words of caution for Luna County residents and his peers.
“Funding education is certainly one of the primary issues here in Santa Fe,” said Smith, a senator of 26 years and chairman of the Senate Finance Committee. “First and foremost, 58 percent of funding goes to public education and higher learning. Our largest employer in Luna County is Deming Public Schools. We will be looking at what revenues will be available for appropriations based on oil and gas barrels. The market is anemic right now and we will not have the additional revenues needed for education.”
