Sen.’s bill would modernize NM’s telecom law
A state senator says he wants to modernize an outdated telecommunications law and give New Mexico the chance to attract more investment in advanced communications technology.
Sen. Michael Padilla, D-Albuquerque says SB193 will change provisions of the 1985 New Mexico Telecommunications Act to put large landline phone companies such as Centurylink and Windstream on the same footing when it comes to pricing flexibility as other providers such as wireless and rural phone companies.
Centurylink Vice President Valerie Dodd told the Journal recently that the current regulations stem from a law passed before widespread adoption of the Internet and wireless phones.
