Sen. Michael Sanchez Announces Additional $24.2 Million State Grant for Los Lunas High School Construction

Los Lunas—Senate Majority Leader Michael S. Sanchez (D-29-Valencia, Bernalillo) today announced that the state Public School Capital Outlay Council (Council) awarded $24.2 million to the Los Lunas Public School District for phase two of the construction project to rebuild 75% of Los Lunas High School.

This year’s grant is in addition to $25.9 million for phase one construction that was awarded by the Council to the School District in 2012.  “We have all seen the great progress that has taken place to date as the high school undergoes the construction.  The additional funding will complete this much-needed project for our students, teachers, and community,” said Sen. Sanchez.

The total cost of the project is estimated at $62.6 million.  Eighty percent of the construction project will be paid for by the Council. The School District is only required to pay 20% of the project’s cost, or $12.5 million.

Phase 1 of the project was completed about four months ahead of schedule.  It included demolition of approximately 60,000 square feet of existing campus buildings.  Phase 2 will include construction of approximately 105,000 square feet of new buildings and renovation of approximately 12,000 square feet of existing buildings.  Once the project is completed, the high school will have space for about 1500 students; current enrollment is about 1300 students.

“Over the years, the current high school campus has had many additions and renovations that could be categorized as ‘piecemeal’.  While the previous projects were important and necessary, they didn’t fully incorporate program design and use of space effectively or efficiently.  I am looking forward to a completed, cohesive and quality campus for our students,” Sen. Sanchez added.
