State legislators have packed up and gone home. The least effective ones have taken their trite sound bites about poll results with them, and we’re better for it.

All through the 60-day session, these statesmen recited what opinion polls supposedly showed about compulsory union fees, about holding back third-graders based on standardized reading tests, and about granting driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants. They touted poll results as the reason laws should be approved or repealed.

Polls have some value for candidates trying to win the next election. But polls on policy questions usually cannot capture details or complexities. More important, a majority opinion in a poll may have nothing to do with what’s right.
