Proposal to eliminate education secretary goes to Senate
By Robert Nott The New Mexican
A plan to eliminate the position of education secretary in favor of forming a state board of education, which would then appoint a superintendent to oversee New Mexico schools, is one step closer to reality.
On Saturday, the Senate Judiciary Committee voted 5-4 along party lines for a “do pass” recommendation of Senate Joint Resolution 2, introduced by Sen. Michael Padilla, D-Albuquerque. The panel’s four Republican members voted against the measure.
