SANTA FE, N.M. —Hundreds of high school students in Santa Fe walked out of class Monday morning in protest of the upcoming PARCC exams.

Students across New Mexico will start taking a new standardized text next week, the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers. About 250 Santa Fe high school students aren’t on board with the idea, according to officials.

Students from both Santa Fe and Capital high schools took part in the walkout. Stephanie Alvarez, a student at Capital High School, said one student knocked down a lock during the walkout.

Police later pulled him over. He was released to his parents, but police said he’ll be charged with criminal damage.

Alvarez said the new testing isn’t fair and is glad students are standing up to fight it.

“I kind of think that we’re doing the right thing, because like, it’s honestly not fair to us,” she said.
