Our View: Keep talking for session deal

Encouraging — that’s the word that describes our feelings after hearing that Gov. Susana Martinez and legislators are discussing how best to pass the state’s stalled capital outlay projects. Rather than communicate via news releases, the governor and legislative leaders in the Senate are negotiating a way to salvage $264 million in capital construction projects across the state.
It’s about time.
On Tuesday, Sen.John Arthur Smith, a Democrat from Deming, and Senate Minority Leader Stuart Ingle, a Republican from Portales, met with Martinez and some of her staff to seek common ground. There might not be an agreement, of course. But by meeting and talking, at least there is a chance of one. The governor — who initially was not going to call a special session — now says she will call one provided lawmakers of both parties can reach a deal before the start of any session.
