New Mexico motorcyclists are stripping their gears over an attempt by state lawmakers to make helmets mandatory on our roads.
“I’ve been riding for a little more than fifty years and I’ve worn a helmet almost continually for all that time,” said Alex Quintana, a retired police officer who KOB caught up with Wednesday at the new Indian Motorcycle dealership in Albuquerque.
“I’ve had lots and lots of bikes…but I think it ought to be whomever’s choice, like it is now,” Quintana said.
Backers of the helmet bill say it’s about safety and spending taxpayer dollars on crash survivors with head and spine injuries. Sen. Jerry Ortiz y Pino, D-Albuquerque, is sponsoring the bill.
