New Mexico will end its long-standing practice of police seizing money and property from people who have not been convicted of a crime.

Gov. Susana Martinez on Friday signed a bill curbing law enforcement’s sweeping powers to seize personal assets, though she also offered a vigorous defense of police officers.

In another high-profile decision, Martinez vetoed a bill that would have legalized research of industrial hemp. She said the bill was flawed because it would have created contradictions between the state’s industrial hemp program and federal drug laws.
