State lawmakers are developing a strategy to prevent land grant fraud after an elected official was accused of using public money to buy penis enhancement pills, among other things.
After months of investigating, State Auditor Hector Balderas said former Tierra Amarilla Land Grant Board President Dennis Wells stole money that was supposed to go toward the land and spent nearly all of it for his own personal use.
“Bottom line, this is one of the most obscene and disrespectful cases,” said Balderas.
Balderas said Wells sold mineral rights from part of the land grant to a Colorado company called Wind River Energy Corporation in 2011 for $233,000. Officials said that deal was shady to begin with because Wells didn’t follow any proper procedure.
But then it gets worse.
