Law giving teachers faster path to leadership faces some criticism

Teachers are now eligible to step into leadership positions as school principals after just three years of classroom experience because of a bill that Gov. Susana Martinez signed into law earlier this month. Not all educators support the change, which proponents say will bring New Mexico more in line with requirements in neighboring states. Teachers union representatives and other local school leaders say few teachers with only three years of experience would be ready to take on a principal position.

Until this year, state law mandated that principals must have six years of teaching experience in the classroom.

But Senate Bill 153, co-sponsored by Sen. Sue Wilson Beffort, R-Sandia Park, and Sen. Bill O’Neill, D-Albuquerque, shortens that to three years — assuming the teacher completes an administrator preparation program and earns a master’s degree. The rule becomes effective July 1.
