‘Jonathan’s Bill’ would require New Mexico high school students to take CPR

‘Jonathan’s Bill’ would require New Mexico high school students to take CPR | KRQE News 13

SANTA FE (KRQE) – A New Mexico family wants to pass a bill to make sure kids in the state are prepared for a medical emergency.

“Imagine your life without life,” said John Madrid.

Four months ago, John Madrid and his family’s lives changed forever.

That’s when they got the news their son and brother, Jonathan, had died.

“You are always there to prtoect them all the time and at this point we aren’t able to,” said Madrid.

The standout Belen football player and soon-to-be college student was out riding a bike in mid-August with a few friends when his family said he fell off and hit his head.

They said Jonathan’s friends then took him back to their place.

“He wasn’t found until a few hours later by his other friends and it was already too late at that point,” said Madrid.

Madrid said if Jonathan’s friends would have known what to look for during a medical emergency, his son may still be alive.

That’s why he now wants every high school student in New Mexico to take a CPR class.

“We are going to call it Jonathan’s bill,” said Democratic State Senator Michael Sanchez of Valencia County.

Sanchez is working with the Madrid family.
