Hannah Skandera elaborates on Gov. Martinez’s education initiatives
Skandera says it’s going to be ‘great year’ for New Mexico school children
SILVER CITY >> Education Secretary-designate Hannah Skandera spoke to the Sun-News after Gov. Susana Martinez’s State of the State address Tuesday to elaborate on the governor’s education proposals for the upcoming Legislative session.
Martinez brought up various educational issues, such as providing what she called “more meaningful” evaluations of teachers as well as giving them better support. She also touched on such issues as scaling back truancy, illiteracy among students and expanding the free breakfast program to include both middle school and high school students and for the free breakfasts to be available in the summer time.
“I’m excited,” Skandera said. “It was really a call to action and a bipartisan call to action. The bottom line is to get things done together, not play politics, and I’m very excited about the great opportunity for our schools going forward. She is championing education.
“It’s going to be a great year,” Skandera said.
Stephanie Ly, New Mexico president of the American Federation of Teachers, had a much different reaction to the governor’s speech. The teachers’ union has been critical of Martinez for what it says is an over-reliance on standardized tests.
