Compromise likely to come late at Roundhouse (KRQE)
SANTA FE (KRQE) – Last minute legislating has become a bit of a trend in Santa Fe. In 2013, a last second deal on corporate tax reform, film tax credits and the budget saved the session at the buzzer. A year later, a similar move was made on a reform package to overhaul the lottery scholarship program.
Now with Republicans in control of the House for the first time in 60 years and Democrats in charge in the Senate, compromise has never been more necessary.
But leaders in both chambers don’t seem to think the change in power in the House will have any impact on the buzzer beating deals.
“I’m sure you’ll still have a lot of that,” said House Speaker Don Tripp, R-Socorro. “It’s the very nature of debates and legislative process.”
“I think you’re going to see that,” said Senate Majority Whip Michael Padilla, D-Albuquerque. “Primarily we’re going to have to focus on what’s going on with our new dollars.”
